In early May, American reality star Kim Kardeshian wore Marilyn Monroe’s iconic dress to the Met Gala. A video shot shortly before the Met Gala shows Kardeshian wriggling into the dress. It soon becomes clear that this one does not fit. 3 weeks later and 7 pounds lighter, Kardeshian appears on the red carpet in Monroe’s original dress. The rest of the evening she wears a replica.
Monroe wore the dress to John F. Kennedy’s birthday party on May 19, 1962 in Maidson Square Garden, New York, to celebrate his 45th birthday . Wearing the dress caused a lot of uproar in both cases. Where the press in 1962 fell about the skin-colored material of the ultra-tight dress, the reactions after Kardeshian’s acte de présence were not tender. Historians, museum and heritage professionalsnot only disapprove of Kardeshian’s decision to wear the dress, but also the organization Ripley’s Believe it or Not! – the owner Media Directors Email Lists of the dress – for lending it. Despite a strict (and unhealthy?) diet plan, Kardeshian wore a white fur scarf on the night of the Met Gala to cover the left open back of the dress that ultimately couldn’t be zipped up.
it’s not the women
“Dear John, it’s not the women.” It was a full-page media statement in the AD of Talpa employees after John de Mol’s statements about misconduct behind the scenes of The Voice of Holland. The BOOS episode, which aired on January 20, 2022, reached a new milestone on YouTube just over a week later. More than 10 million views for the approximately 1.5-hour episode in which Tim Hofman challenges John de Mol.
De Mol: “I hope everyone learns from this: open your mouth, don’t wait, don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid. You have to open your mouth, because only then can we help you. (…) I think we have sufficient counters to report abuses.” The women at Talpa Media were displeased with his reaction to the cases of transgressive behaviour. “With the blush on our jaws, we heard what the reaction was from John de Mol.”
